A-level PE Exams

  • Exam Paper 1: 2 hours 30 mins, 40% of A-level, 140 marks
  • Exam Paper 2: 2 hours, 30% of A-level, 100 marks
  • NEA 1 (Non-exam assessment): 15% of A-level, 40 marks
  • NEA 2 (Non-exam assessment): 15% of A-level, 40 marks

Exams include a mix of short-answer and multi-step questions. You’ll have access to exam centres nationwide. A Practical Endorsement is available for hands-on lab experience but is optional.

Course Content

A-level PE

In this topic, you will study the anatomical and physiological roles of body systems and how exercise impacts them. You will examine acute responses and chronic adaptations to different types of exercise. Newton’s Three Laws of Motion—force, centre of mass, and stability—will be explored to enhance understanding of sports performance. You will also learn about energy concepts and their relevance to physical activity.
In this unit, you will learn the importance of diet and nutrition before, during, and after exercise. You will study fatigue, recovery, and energy systems, applying this knowledge to training and performance improvement. This includes fitness components, training methods, and physiological adaptations. You will also explore injury prevention and rehabilitation and demonstrate movement analysis through examples such as linear, angular, and projectile motion, as well as fluid mechanics.
In this unit, you will explore the nature and development of skills in sport, enhanced through practical experience as a coach or performer. You will examine learning theories and their link to skill development. At A-level, you will deepen your understanding of memory systems in skill acquisition and apply knowledge of practices, feedback, and guidance to performance. You will also generate and evaluate quantitative data related to skill acquisition.
You will explore sports psychology’s role in optimising performance for athletes and teams. You will examine key psychological theories and perspectives, applying them to behaviours that impact performance. A central focus will be the nature vs nurture debate and its interaction. You will analyse theories, applying different interpretations to various scenarios, and demonstrate both support for and critique of each, using sporting examples.
You will explore the dynamic relationship between sport and society, recognising parallels with societal changes. Applying this understanding, you will analyse historical and contemporary trends and potential future developments. You will examine how commercialisation and politics shape sport, ethical challenges, pressures to cheat, and factors influencing deviance, along with responses from national and international bodies. Additionally, you will assess the media’s role in sport, including the impact of social media.

Yes! You study the same curriculum, take the same examinations and get the same qualification. The only difference is that the course is specially designed to be studied from home in your own time.
You will have access to your personal tutor, via email, who will mark your assignments and guide you through the course to help you get ready for your examinations. In addition, you will be supplied with a comprehensive Study Guide which will help you through the study and assessment process. Assignments are marked by your personal tutor within 5 days. Your personal tutor will be highly experienced in their subject area and qualified to teach.
